Wide Open (Together Our Space Gallery)
This two-month alternative summer show invites visitors to step out of the mainstream and into a wide open landscape of work created by 20 ‘outsider’ artists who, for reasons of mental health difficulties or other emotional distress, choose not to become involved with traditional arts institutions.
The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut ‘raw art’, a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe works created outside the boundaries of official culture. Originally, this art form was ‘discovered’ by psychiatrists amongst patients in the European mental institutions and insane asylums of the late 19th Century.
The Together Our Space Gallery is owned by Together, and all artists participating in the show are part of Studio Upstairs, a registered charity which runs therapeutic arts communities in London and Bristol.
Venue: Together Our Space Gallery, 12 Old Street, London EC1V 9BE

How does culture fit within the Big Society, localism, and making neighbourhoods better?
A one day masterclass
How does culture fit within the Big Society, localism, and making neighbourhoods better? Is there room for culture within the the local authority improvement agenda? How can creativity help to engage people? In lean times, what is the argument for embedding culture within renewal work? Is the role of the arts in public realm bigger than public art?
This one day conference, supported by Arts Council England, will draw upon a successful and nationally unique three year programme called ‘Creative Places’ in Sheffield.
Creative Places provides opportunities for the arts to be embedded within large-scale housing/community building programmes and improved cultural provision in the places experiencing housing renewal and growth. The programme has been successful in: giving housing staff the confidence to use the arts to deliver their core priorities | Getting more people and more different sorts of people engaged in local changes | Challenging thinking about design and landscaping in neighbourhoods.
The conference will bring together nationally acclaimed experts with a wealth of experience in culture, regeneration, placemaking, meanwhile opportunities, and wellbeing. Participants will be given tools and evidence to help embed cultural policy within their work and to take a persuasive & practical argument to their organisations and the event will launch a brand new brand new visioning document.
