Hi Julian

Well, I know that when I joined the Cannon's Health Club a few years' ago, they actually organise an individual meeting with you with tea and biscuits first, then a chat with one of their staff about what you hope to gain from membership (i.e. relaxing swims, use of the gym to build fitness/stamina etc) and a tour of all the facilities with explanations. I think that's a nice and easy way to ease people into what can be a very busy and noisy atmosphere. Perhaps you could visit either Cannon's at Hayes, or David Lloyd at Sidcup, to find out what training their staff have in welcoming people and see if there are any transferable ideas to local Council facilities? Best wishes, Jan Lovett

I was thinking, Julian: have you or your colleagues done any research into the kind of support that's available at health clubs/gyms for those with mental health needs? I know that Tina Slater has now retired from Bromley MyTime, but I recall she was doing some work at The Spa in Beckenham around training staff in how to best support people with mental health needs when they attend sporting facilities. Maybe there is some work that could link you up with someone like Peter Grand, to offer training to some of the sporting facilities in Bromley and surrounding areas? Just a thought.
