When Work Relationships Break Down
Facing the Challenges, Transforming the Culture
Up and down the country, employment advisors working in mental health job retention, report that over 50% of cases involve workplace conflict. As the human reaction to excessive workplace stress is either ‘flight or flight’ this is not surprising.
The human and financial costs arising from this issue are immense, leading as it does to lost production, increased sickness absence, accidents, disciplinary hearings, grievances, litigation and damage to staff morale.
The resolution of these problems is probably what employers, trade union reps and job retention workers find most challenging. This conference will address these issues, bringing together examples of best practice in not only resolving conflict, but also taking measures which prevent them occurring in the first place.
Who should attend?
- Employment Advisors and Vocational Support Workers within IAPT and Fit for Work Teams
- JC+ Work Programme Advisory Services and Brokers
- Occupational Therapists and other health professionals in both Primary and Secondary care
- Human Resource Managers and Occupational Health Staff
- Job retention workers, trade union representatives, DEAs, EAPs and all those interested in job retention and workplace conflict resolution.

Spirit Possession and Mental Health
Spirit possession is recognised world wide across many cultures and by several religions. Spirit possession is often seen as an idiom of distress causing a change in behaviour and mental well being.
Spirit possession is also included in the ICD 10 and DSM IV classifications of mental disorders, yet the extent to which it is recognised and / or discussed in clinical practice is less than we would expect, even in UK cities where there resides a diverse population.
This one day event will consider the critical themes and debates on spirit possession from an anthropological, social, psychological, medical and religious perspective using a range of illustrative case study, clinical practice, research and short film presentations.

Is Supported Living Really Working?
A one day conference
Can we confidently say that Supported Living is being delivered effectively? After the scandal at Winterbourne View, can this approach be applied to people with high and complex support needs?
With support from the Department of Health, NDTi has been running the Housing and Social Inclusion project for two years working with seven Local Authorities working to change and improve their housing and support services for people with learning disabilities. This project has generated significant learning and a range of resources on many of the key issues.
This conference offers delegates the opportunity to:
- Hear from leading national experts about the challenges in delivering cost effective housing and support for people with learning disabilities and some ways of meeting these challenges.
- Explore the principles behind social inclusion for this group of people and how best to deliver this in practice.
- In the wake of the Winterbourne View scandal, to look at whether supported housing can be a viable model for people who challenge.
- Take advantage of a series of workshops focussing on practical tools to support the effective delivery of person-centred housing and support aimed at maximising rights, choice and control.

A New Approach to Mental Health
Improving outcomes for all
One in four of us will encounter a mental health problem of some kind during our lives and one in six do so at any one time. 45% of GPs say stress and mental health issues will be the biggest health issue they will treat this year. Nearly a quarter of disability in the UK is caused through mental ill health and treatment is the single most expensive cost to the NHS. The publication of the white paper No Health without Mental Health sets out the cross-government strategy that aims to mainstream mental health in England and improve standards of care, support and treatment.
At A New Approach to Mental Health our expert speakers will explore the government's vision and discuss how the mental health strategy can be implemented to best ensure outcomes are successful. Delegates will have the chance to challenge, discuss and debate the key issues and gain relevant insight applicable to their professional roles.
