Non Instructed Advocacy
1 or 2 Day Course

Non-Instructed Advocacy (NIA) has been practiced since the early development of advocacy support in the UK, and has recently years that it has taken a more central stage as part of advocacy sector practice. 

Day One is designed to support advocates to understand what Non-Instructed Advocacy is, when to use it and provide an overview of the methods required to deliver it effectively. 

By the end of Day One participants will:

  • Understand the principles underlying non-instructed advocacy and know when to use NIA methods
  • Be able to clearly explain the role of the Non-Instructed Advocate
  • Be able to distinguish between different methods of delivering Non-Instructed Advocacy and have an overview of how to apply them
  • Start to develop an understanding of the skills that are required for Non Instructed Advocacy 

Day 2 focuses on the skills and processes for effective NIA practice. In order to attend this training day you need to have attended the Action for Advocacy Day 1 of the NIA training.

By the end Day Two participants will:

  • Understand how to keep the person being advocated for central to any NIA work.
  • Understand the difference between statutory role of a NIA and general NIA.
  • Have a deeper understanding of the skills required for each of the four NIA methods.
  • Have used the advocacy cycle as a tool in progressing Non Instructed Advocacy casework.
  • Have been provided with links to basic rights/entitlements NIA should be familiar with in relation to their client/partner.

Cost: Voluntary Sector £115, others £145 per day. (10% discount if both days are booked together.
