Welcome to the learning pages. These pages are run by LearningNET, a partnership of organisations that all have an interest in education, learning and social inclusion. We work together to promote access to education and learning for people with mental health issues. We have an interest in enabling people with mental illness to exercise choice in education and learning, and also in promoting mental wellbeing within places of education. We work with a number of organisations, such as colleges and training centres to ensure fair and equal access to educational resources.

We should all be involved in promoting social inclusion because:

  • Common mental health problems affect up to one in six of the general population at any one time. Almost everyone will know someone who has had mental health problems at some point in their lives.
  • Involvement in learning can have a positive effect on someone's mental health. In addition to acquiring new skills, learning can promote confidence and give people a greater sense of purpose. It allows people to meet other students and make new friends, and to access better jobs and housing.

  • Services that support welcoming access to learning for people with mental ill-health.
  • Events about learning.
  • Evidence and policy - how to improve the organisation you work in to be more welcoming and supportive to people with mental ill-health.
  • Guidance and tools that can be used to help people plan to get into education and ensure people experience a warm welcome when participating in learning.
  • News - stories about people's positive experiences of learning and education services in the borough.

If you would like more information about learning, social inclusion and mental health, Develop can also offer you:

  • Discussion Forum - A place to find to ask questions, find support and obtain advice on how to promote socially inclusive learning in Bromley and what to do if issues relating to mental health arise in your workplace. (Available to registered site users).
  • Training events about how to develop socially inclusive learning and about mental ill-health (from handling stress and promoting recovery through to awareness training about mental illness).

ISMA are tackling stress

Wednesday 4th November was National Stress Awareness Day, organised by ISMA (www.isma.org.uk)

They are now inviting all colleagues in the post-16 sector to complete the HSE stress survey. It's 18 months since UCU undertook its surveys which led to reports on Tackling Stress in the FE and the HE sectors. ISMA woukld like to know what the picture is now, across all areas of the post-16 education and skills arena. Anyone who participates will receive a free copy of the results but they will not receive any unsolicited follow-up mails, spam etc.

Bromley Field Studies Centre offering six free 'Wild and Wonderful' gardening courses

IconFollowing a successful bid to the Learning and Skills Council, The Field Studies Centre is delighted to offer this training to Bromley's residents. It is particularly keen to target adults living in the Cray area from BR5 & BR6 postcodes. The course will include:

  • How to garden in containers, window boxes and small spaces
  • How to encourage birds, bees, and butterflies into a green space
  • How to make and create different habitats for birds, mammals, and insects
  • How to use cameras and video equipment to film and record activities

The TrEE Centre is fully accessible and equipped with a  range of interactive conservation and horticultural equipment and resources that the local community and participants are welcome to use. The first course is being held on Tuesdays, 10.00 -13.00 on Oct 6,13,20,27. We are currently taking bookings for this and all courses.
